Unfortunately, finding the top milk frother is as hard as finding a cow jumping over the moon. In the market, there are lots of similar kinds of products. And every seller claims that their product is best. So, a little education on this topic will help you a lot in selecting the right product.
What is a Milk Frother?
A milk frother is a handy household device which creates a foamy liquid for all espresso and cappuccino lovers. Commonly, a milk frother consists of a whisk attached to either end of the handheld wand or bottom of a carafe. When you run the machine to create foam, air spins into a cup of milk while creating a whipped cream by separating the fat from the milk. This fluffy thick cream is used as topping on any coffee beverages to improve the taste and texture. (Plus it makes it look really cool!)
You can categorize a Milk Frother in many types based on its operation procedure and functionality. Functionally, some are suitable for hot froth milk whereas some are cold, some are best for low fat, others may be suitable for whole milk. With buying a good frother machine, you can also prepare other tasty beverages like hot chocolate, milkshakes, soups, desserts or salad dressing
The other types based on operation procedure are discussed below.
What kind of milk to use for frothing?
Humans are the only animal to drink milk as adults, but we do not care. It is delicious!). It is the secretion of the mammary glands of a cow, goat, or other animal. It contains essential nutrients for our body. It contains vitamin D, Calcium and Potassium.
The natural sugar (lactose) in milk requires a unique digestive enzyme (lactase) that some people don't have.
Milk consists mainly of water, fat, sugar, protein, and some bacteria. When choosing the milk for frothing, we have to take look at the following aspects
- Bubbles in the foam
- Duration of froth per milk
- Tenderness and creaminess of milk
- Micro-foam consistency
- Percentage of fat and protein content
The best milk for froth (making cappuccinos):
Non-fat or Skimmed milk - Non-fat dairy creates macro-bubbles and is easy to froth for the beginner. Because of absent of fat, the taste of foam from skimmed milk is not as tasty as other whole milks.
2% milk - 2% milk is similar to skimmed milk and creates macro-bubbles. It is also easier to froth, but the taste is still not up to par with whole milk.
1% milk - 1% milk is the in between of skimmed and whole milk. It is ideal for those who want to cut calories from their diet.
Whole milk – If you prefer creamy and rich foam whole milk is the best option for you. Frothing whole-milk is a difficult task as the fat weighs down the foam at the bottom of the pot. But the incorporation of a right amount of steam and air will make a smooth froth best for cappuccinos.
Non-dairy milk – Soy, coconut, or almond froth are the main options. However the bubbles are not consistent enough as the protein structure of these type of fluids will not hold the bubbles properly.
Organic and lactose-free milk - These do not froth as well as other types of milk.
The best milk for steam (makes lattes):
All kinds of milk skimmed, whole, 1% milk, 2% milk, soy, coconut, organic and lactose-free milk are suitable for steam; thus you can use any of them in a latte.
What kind of milk do they have at Starbucks?
Starbucks prepares their lattes and other milk-based drinks with whole milk. They have been doing this after their establishment in 1971. After many consecutive requests from Starbucks fans for 30 years, in 2007 they changed their standards and started serving their espresso with 2% milk. Currently, they serve almond, coconut, nonfat, whole, 2% milk, and soy milk.

Quick Frothing Tips to Enjoy a Perfect Cup
The following tips will help you to prepare a perfect cup of your favorite drink using a frother machine.
Don’t over froth – stop when you see enough bubbles in a mug. It should be double than the milk volume you poured in. If you continue, it will kill the bubbles which will not come back.
Maintain the right quantity – most of the electric devices are marked with maximum and minimum level indicators. Don't pour over the maximum line; it will cause overflow. Don't pour below the minimum line, it may scald. In both cases, the cleaning will be difficult.
For handheld frothers, though there is no indicator, you have to know the limit. Froth no more than 5 ounces at a time. Excess liquids put extra pressure on the device and may cause damage.
Always try to froth milk in smaller batches. For back to back forthing, take a short break to protect overheating the motor.
Finally – don't let the foam sit for a long time, pour it immediately. The more you wait, the more the texture of the milk begins to break down. If you want to leave the un-textured milk in the bottom of the pitcher, use a spoon to pull out foam from the upper portion.
Clean the steam wand or carafe after every use! It is a convenient place for growing bacteria to grow (especially from milk). To clean, fill the frothing pitcher with warm soapy water and run the steam wand like frothing milk.
Repeat the procedure with clean water to ensure you get it nice and clean.
How does it make the froth or cream?
To understand the milk frother we have to understand the science behind milk. Cow milk consists of four main components – water, protein, carbohydrate, and fat.
Milk consists of 3.3% protein including all nine essential amino acids (the amino acids we can only get from food). There are two main subtypes’ in casein and serum.
Serum, or whey proteins, contains most of the essential amino acids. The serum is thickened by heat but some of the proteins denature as well. This process is responsible for the distinct flavor in cooked milk.
Caseins form spherical micelles in the water component of milk. When heating milk, the injected air bubbles distort the micelles. The protein molecules (are) then introduced to the air and leads to the formation of foam.
To sum it up, milk frothers act to break down the micelles by heating and injecting air into the warm milk to create bubbles.
Types of Milk Frothers
Before you buy your device, you have to understand what you need it for. There are three primary types of milk frothers
- Handheld Motorized Whisk
- Hand-Pump Milk Frother
- Electric Milk Frother
Handheld Motorized Whisk
This type of milk frother consists of a rubber or plastic handle attached to a long wand with a spiral whisk at the end. It is operated mainly by battery, and some models come with rechargeable battery options.
After you insert the battery into the port), you can run it by pushing a button and holding into the milk pot. It will take few seconds to turn your hot or cold milk into a creamy foam. It is also perfect for preparing hot chocolate, milkshakes, cocktails, fruits juices, soups, sauces, salad dressings, whipped eggs, etc. As an added bonus you will look like a chef right from the Food Network J. You can also froth non-dairy milk like coconut, soy or almond too.
Limitations of this type of frother is that it cannot steam milk. To heat the milk you have to microwave oven or stove. Handheld frothesr also consumes lots of power during frothing so be prepared to change the battery frequently.
Handheld frothers are usually low in price, lightweight, and beautifully designed. They are also easy to clean and store while being able to be portable during traveling.
Hand-Pump Milk Frother
This type of frother looks like a pitcher made of steel or glass with a plunger attached on the lid. The plunger is made of stainless steel, mesh, or plastic. To start frothing, you have to pour milk into the pitcher, connect the top with the plunger, and mix until the liquid turns into foam. It will take a minute or less depending on (the) milk type.
Like a handheld frother, it has no self-heating system. To froth hot milk you have to use a microwave or stove. Pumping does not require much pressure, however it can be difficult if one has a condition like arthritis.
The price of a hand-pump milk frother is higher than the handheld but cheaper than electric type. It has low maintenance and operating costs. There is no battery or electricity required to run it, it is easy to clean, and very sleek looking.
Electric Milk Frother
This frother looks like a heating jug or carafe, (an open-topped glass flask typically used for serving wine or water). It uses multiple cups at a time based on its size.
Just pour the milk into the carafe and press the switch. The device will do the rest of the work. The best part is that after frothing is complete, device will automatically shut-off.
The built-in induction heater facilities both hot or cold milk. It also heats beverages and keeps them warm. You can use it for boil water as well. For frothing a different kind of milk, it has two types of whisks which magnetically attach with the wand.
The only unfortunate part of this type of frother is that it will cost you more (than the others). It is more expensive than handheld and hand-pump types. But it will be worth your money with its performance.
The automatic electric milk frother is preferred by many as for it froths and steams milk with ease. The plug-in system relieves you from purchasing lots of batteries and having to manhandle the machine.
Things to consider before buying a milk frother
Before you buy a frother, you must consider these following factors).
Just like life you only get one chance to make a first impression.I know you want the one that makes your kitchen look like it is ready for television). Fortunately, all new milk frothers come with elegant designs and colors with something for everyone. If you put less weight on budget then automatic electric frothers are best for you. If you want to travel with it, the handheld whisker will be the best.
Types of Milk You Will Use
Some like cappuccinos while others may like lattes or hot chocolate. Some like hot froth and others like cold froth. Some frother are best suited for whole milk while others with lactose intolerance may need to choose a frother best for soy or almond milks.
Of course getting a good froth is the most important thing) when using a milk frothing device. Lattes need just steamed milk, while cappuccinos needed thick foamy froth. The electric frother is compatible with almost all types of frothing, thus best suited for your coffee or caffeine beverages. The manual and handheld frothers also have some distinctive features and are better suited for creams and milkshakes..
Do you want a warm froth on a hot chocolate? That does not sound good to me Some frothers have built-in temperature control systems that can froth both hot and cold milk.
Mostly temperature control systems are available in carafe type electric frothers. proper heating is important, without proper heating the process of aeration will not make the froth). Per expert opinion, 150 – 155 degree F is ideal for heating milk.
How well you clean your machine) is closely related to the taste and longevity of frother machine. Some devices are easy to clean by simply rinsing it under tap water. Some need much more work to clean. Milk is a thick liquid that can curdle, if that happens, it will even harder to clean. So make sure you clean it immediately after each use. In the case of carafe style frothers, be sure that the internal wall is dishwasher safe.
Durability largely depends on the material used to construct the body of the frother machine. Most handheld frothers are made by Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic handles, stainless steel wands, and spiral whisks. Electric frothers are mostly built with stainless steel and a hand-pump frother made of either glass or stainless steel. Naturally, stainless steel is more durable than other materials. Stainless steel is also much safer to prepare food items with as it is harder for bacteria to thrive on it.
Before buying anything, the final decision always depends on budget. Remember the universal of money, “You get what you pay for”). There are frothers available from a wide range of prices).
Can you make a whip cream froth?
Whipped cream can turn an ordinary drink into a fabulous one. If anyone says they do not like whip cream, they ae a liar!!). But whipped cream from the store contains enormous calories in it.
Now the question is that how we can get a healthier version of it? You can buy it… but you are also buying a mix of hydrogenated vegetable oil and fructose corn syrup. This crap is just artificial ingredients meant to make it last longer on the shelves.
It is much better to make whipped cream at home. It is a very simple process if you have a handheld frother at home.

- Halfway add vanilla and sugar (or powdered sugar)
- Froth again, but not too much more (too much frothing may turn it into butter)
- Remove it, Serve, and Enjoy!!!
You can beat cream from milk or any other high fat non-dairy substitutes (like bananas and eggs) by using a hand-pumped frothing machine.
What does a milk frother do?
The primary function of a milk frother to add air bubbles into milk or any other beverages. Because of rising popularity of coffee drinks like cappuccino or coca many people want to make it at home. Handheld wand frothers are rather easy to clean than carafe type. Take some warm soapy water in a pot and run the whisk for a few seconds. Then rinse it under tap water, that simple.
Be careful though; don't immerse the handle into water or any other liquid. Wipe it using a cloth to clean it.
In case of electric frother, you have to follow the procedures as below.
First of all disconnect the cord from the wall connection then detache the base from the carafe.
The carafe –rinse with warm soapy water, use a soft cloth or scrub to wash, and wipe with dry rags. Clean after every use for better performance and to prevent cross contamination from previous flavors.
The Lid and whiskers – Wash it thoroughly with warm soapy water. Remove the silicon ring. Keep it upside down on the countertop to allow it to dry. Reassemble it and store.
The exterior of carafe – Wipe appropriately with dry cloths.
Don't place the whisk or any parts of the frother in a dishwasher.

How to use a handheld milk frother wand?
Using a handheld milk frother is not tricky at all. You can do it quickly.

How to use a milk frother on an espresso machine?
Frothing milk with an espresso machine is very simple. Most of the espresso machines have visible wand arms. This attached arm forces steam into your milk, slowly warming it with pressure. At the same time, it aerates into the liquid.
Need the following to froth
- A frothing carafe or mug suitable for an espresso machine
- 1/3 cup of milk
How to make it
- Pour cold milk into the carafe or mug
- Insert the steam wand into the carafe just below the milk surface
- Keep the tip of the rod near to the side of the carafe to avoid splashing
- Press the button on the espresso machine to start
- Move the carafe gently around the wand to get smooth bubbles
- When the amount of foam doubles than stop the device
- Remove the wand from the carafe
- Pour & Enjoy
Transfer the frothed milk into your espresso or other drink as soon as possible. You may leave some in the pitcher to create latte art (for my baristas hahaha).
